A recent Angus Reid poll takes aim once again at legitimate firearm owners. The poll results show that 76% of Canadians believe gun violence is a severe problem in Canada and 55% think gangs are an issue only in certain areas. It goes on to say 52% say a complete ban on handguns is justified and 55% actually believe that the ban will effectively curb violence.

If bans are supposedly so effective, could someone please tell me why the alcohol prohibition in the 1930’s didn’t work, why there is still prostitution in the streets, why the banning of drugs like cocaine, heroine, crystal meth, etc., has not effectively curbed their use. Clearly bans don’t work! Anyone who thinks they do would only come to the same conclusion as me if they consider the above. Bans only affect legal law abiding citizens and a handgun ban would change virtually nothing in Canadian society, except for legal owners who are not the problem.

Poll any murder victim if they would have liked a handgun to defend themselves and I’ll bet if they could answer all would say yes or 100% in favor. Put another way by an author I don’t remember “when seconds count, police are just minutes away.”

Canadians need to wake up to reality. Take Burma right now where only the police and soldiers have guns (Allan Rock’s wish for Canada), and people, fighting for democracy, are being shot by their own government. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” always has, always will.

Bottom line, Canadians need to rethink the ownership of firearms issue before they give up the freedom our fathers and grandfathers fought two world wars with guns to protect.
